{"id":10944,"date":"2018-09-20T09:25:31","date_gmt":"2018-09-19T21:25:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/biblesociety.org.nz\/?p=10944"},"modified":"2018-09-20T09:25:31","modified_gmt":"2018-09-19T21:25:31","slug":"te-paipera-tapu-holy-bible-in-maori-celebrates-150-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newzealandmarketing.co.nz\/wordpress\/te-paipera-tapu-holy-bible-in-maori-celebrates-150-years\/","title":{"rendered":"Te Paipera Tapu (Holy Bible in M\u0101ori) celebrates 150 years"},"content":{"rendered":"<style>\/*! elementor - v3.5.6 - 28-02-2022 *\/\n.elementor-heading-title{padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1}.elementor-widget-heading .elementor-heading-title[class*=elementor-size-]>a{color:inherit;font-size:inherit;line-height:inherit}.elementor-widget-heading .elementor-heading-title.elementor-size-small{font-size:15px}.elementor-widget-heading .elementor-heading-title.elementor-size-medium{font-size:19px}.elementor-widget-heading .elementor-heading-title.elementor-size-large{font-size:29px}.elementor-widget-heading .elementor-heading-title.elementor-size-xl{font-size:39px}.elementor-widget-heading .elementor-heading-title.elementor-size-xxl{font-size:59px}<\/style>\n<h2>This year marks the 150th anniversary of the publication of the first edition of Te Paipera Tapu (The Holy Bible in M\u0101ori).<\/h2>\n<p>While the first ever Scriptures in Te Reo M\u0101ori were published in Sydney in 1827 by the New South Wales Bible Society, this was the first ever full M\u0101ori Bible.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_10946\" style=\"width: 260px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10946\" src=\"https:\/\/newzealandmarketing.co.nz\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Paipera-Tapu-app-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"444\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-10946\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A sneak peak at the upcoming Paipera Tapu app, to be released early in 2019.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>But the journey of the Bible in Te Reo M\u0101ori didn\u2019t stop there.<\/p>\n<p>This edition was followed by three further versions in 1889, 1925 and 1952, as well as a reformatted edition of the 1952 text which was published in 2012.<\/p>\n<p>Then there was\u00a0<em>T\u0101ku Paipera,\u00a0<\/em>the only M\u0101ori Children\u2019s Bible storybook available, launched at the end of 2016.<\/p>\n<p>Now, that very first edition of\u00a0<strong>Te Paipera Tapu<\/strong>, first published in 1868, has just been digitised. \u00a0And this digitised version will be one of the many tools used to help produce a brand new translation, in more contemporary language for today\u2019s Te Reo M\u0101ori speakers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTranslation of any significance takes time, and anecdotal evidence suggests that contemporary M\u0101ori usage is already considerably different from the language of the current M\u0101ori Bible.\u00a0 So we need to be pro-active,\u201d commented Dr Stephen Pattemore, Bible Society\u2019s Translations Director.<\/p>\n<p>A new mobile M\u0101ori Bible app is also currently in development and will feature the current M\u0101ori Bible text (2012) as well as English Bible translations for people who want to read Te Reo M\u0101ori alongside an English text such as the Good News Bible.
