Bible Society New Zealand, Te Wānanga Ihorangi and the Christian Broadcasting Association have come together to record all 66 books of Te Paipera Tapu, professionally recorded, mastered and distributed across Aotearoa.

Portions Will Be Released As They Are Produced
The magnitude of the project, all 66 books of the Māori Bible, demands a thoughtful and incremental approach. The journey is divided into manageable phases so each release is timely and appropriate, and so the community can walk this transformative process together. From the Gospels to the New Testament, each milestone will be celebrated collectively, and when the entire Māori Audio Bible is finalised, a grand celebration will mark this labour of love and faith that uplifts Te Paipera Tapu throughout Aotearoa.

About Te Wānanga Ihorangi
Te Wānanga Ihorangi, formerly known as Oati, began in 2018 and is a registered charitable trust. As a kaupapa, they are committed to the reclamation, preservation, and revitalisation of te reo Māori in Aotearoa. They see the flourishing of te reo and tikanga Māori as inherently tied to the spiritual, physical, and social well-being of their communities.
A unique aspect of Te Wānanga Ihorangi is their commitment to seeing te reo Māori as the primary medium in which their hapori whakapono express their faith and beliefs. Made up of whānau from Ringātu, Mihinare, Te Hāhi Iriiri and Te Hāhi Pakipaki whakapapa, this whakapono-based language school is the only one of its kind in Aotearoa.

About CBA
The Christian Broadcasting Association (CBA) has been a vital partner in bringing the audio version of Te Paipera Tapu, the Bible in te reo Māori, to life. When the cost of studio and equipment hire threatened to stall the project, CBA stepped in and generously offered their studios and equipment free of charge, making it possible for the work to continue.
Each week, readers from Te Wānanga Ihorangi gather in CBA's studios to record God's Word in Māori, and the partnership between our three missionally-aligned organisations has grown into a warm and lasting relationship. We are deeply grateful for CBA's heart for Scripture and their practical generosity in helping make the Māori Audio Bible a reality.

In Conversation With Rev’d Te Karere Scarborough
Rev’d Te Karere Scarborough (Tumuaki | Co-Principal) of Te Wānanga Ihorangi shares the background, kaupapa and heart behind the Māori Audio Bible project.
How did the partnership come about?
Through the relationship between Steve (Relationships Director at Bible Society New Zealand) and myself, studying te reo Māori together, and the desire to use the Māori Bible as an ongoing resource for faith and language revitalisation.
What is the significance of the partnership?
It represents a unity that’s symbolic of Te Tiriti o Waitangi. As a Māori-led kaupapa, we love partnering with the Bible Society while driving the work from a Māori frame, bringing about change and ongoing flourishing for our own people.
How will this project be approached?
In chunks, with timely and appropriate releases. We’d like our communities to come on a journey with us. After the Gospels are done, let’s celebrate. After the NT is done, let’s get together again. When the whole book is done, let’s really come together and praise God for his goodness.
What is the duration and desired outcome?
2.5–3 years, with a completed Māori Audio Bible available on all appropriate channels.
Who is Te Wānanga Ihorangi?
We are a faith-based Māori language school. This is one of the most important language resources we could get behind. We are an oral people and it only makes sense that this will be available to be ‘heard’ by our communities.
Who will be involved and how can people support this?
We have put our own resources alongside the Bible Society, but we need our communities to get behind us too. Recording, mastering and distributing a high-quality resource takes time and resources, so once the fundraising campaign is out there, please get behind it.
