Malawi

Malawi is a landlocked nation in Southeastern Africa with an estimated population of 22.8 million people, making it one of the most densely populated countries in the region. The nation is predominantly Christian, with 79.3{0efa61f77e4cd09e7b4f08094b2911ffcdf8ad00293cb60de4a24edfe6036ea2} identifying as Christian and 14{0efa61f77e4cd09e7b4f08094b2911ffcdf8ad00293cb60de4a24edfe6036ea2} as Muslim, alongside small minorities practising traditional and other religious beliefs.

Despite the high number of Christians, there remains a significant shortage of biblical and evangelical resources. Church leaders and para‑church organisations across various denominations have expressed the ongoing need for more materials, especially for children’s ministry. This need is further emphasised by Malawi’s child population: among the 22.8 million people in the country, children make up the largest age group, with 15.1{0efa61f77e4cd09e7b4f08094b2911ffcdf8ad00293cb60de4a24edfe6036ea2} aged 0–4 and 22{0efa61f77e4cd09e7b4f08094b2911ffcdf8ad00293cb60de4a24edfe6036ea2} aged 5–12, highlighting the urgent demand for children’s theological resources.

Motivated by Jesus’ words in Matthew 19:14 NIV, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these,” the Bible Society of Malawi launched the ‘Let the Children Encounter Christ Project.’ This initiative seeks to nurture and strengthen the faith of 588 children aged 5–13 year old by distributing Children’s Bibles in churches across four districts: Kasungu, Karonga, Balaka, and Mwanza. The project works closely with church leaders and local communities to ensure that the Bible reaches beneficiaries and that Bible engagement and pastoral support are effective.

FURTHER BIBLE MISSION PROJECTS

Burkina Faso

Burkina Faso, a West African nation of approximately 24.6 million people, has a Christian population of about 26.3{0efa61f77e4cd09e7b4f08094b2911ffcdf8ad00293cb60de4a24edfe6036ea2}. Many believers there face intense pressures that have greatly affected the church’s ability to teach and disciple effectively. As a result, ongoing prayer and support are essential for the Bible Society of Burkina Faso as they work to bring more biblical resources into the country.

One of their key initiatives is the Birifor Bible Translation. Birifor is spoken by more than 250,000 people in the southwestern region of Burkina Faso. While the New Testament was published in Birifor in 1993, there remains a growing need for the complete Bible in this language.

Liberia

Liberia, the oldest republic in West Africa, upholds freedom of religion, with about 40{0efa61f77e4cd09e7b4f08094b2911ffcdf8ad00293cb60de4a24edfe6036ea2} of the population identifying as Christian and 16{0efa61f77e4cd09e7b4f08094b2911ffcdf8ad00293cb60de4a24edfe6036ea2} as Muslim. Despite this rich religious landscape, the country faces severe poverty, with 84{0efa61f77e4cd09e7b4f08094b2911ffcdf8ad00293cb60de4a24edfe6036ea2} of people living on less than $1.25 a day, which impacts access to formal education. This problem has led to a low literacy rate, with only 47{0efa61f77e4cd09e7b4f08094b2911ffcdf8ad00293cb60de4a24edfe6036ea2} of adults being literate.

To address these challenges and to strengthen their faith, the Bible Society of Liberia launched the Mother Tongue Project. This initiative provides literacy education through Bible Study, aiming to positively impact 6,500 non‑literate Christian adults across churches and communities in the Gola, Bassa, Mann, Dan, and Grebo language groups.

Uruguay

Uruguay, like many countries, was severely affected by the COVID‑19 pandemic, and its social and economic recovery has been slow. The most vulnerable groups, especially children who are already living in poverty, have suffered the most. Many of these children survive on just one meal a day, which is also often provided by the state.

In response, the Bible Society of Uruguay, in partnership with local schools and churches, is working tirelessly to support these young ones spiritual and physical need. Through the Breakfast with Jesus project, they provide Bibles, biblical storybooks, and a warm breakfast to 1,000 children aged 3 to 12 in some of the country’s most impoverished areas.

Türkiye

Türkiye, a beautiful nation bridging Europe and Asia, has seen its Christian population decline sharply since World War I. Today, Christians make up only about 0.1{0efa61f77e4cd09e7b4f08094b2911ffcdf8ad00293cb60de4a24edfe6036ea2} of its more than 80 million people, making it a minority religion in a predominantly Muslim country. This reality places the Turkish Bible Society and the rare Christian bookstore it operates at risk, as the closure of either would make reopening extremely difficult in the current political and religious context.

Prayer and support are urgently needed as the Core Presence project seeks financial support to strengthen and sustain the Turkish Bible Society’s vital ministry.
