Ghana

Ghana, formerly known as the Gold Coast, was a British colony prized for its rich natural resources, especially gold and cocoa. European contact began in the 15th century, but British dominance solidified in the 19th century. Christian missionaries began arriving in the early 19th century, establishing schools and churches that played a key role in spreading Western education and Christianity, particularly in the south.

Ghana gained independence in 1957 under Kwame Nkrumah, becoming the first sub-Saharan African nation to do so. After a period of political instability marked by coups and military rule, Ghana returned to democratic governance in 1992. Since then, Ghana has maintained relative political stability and is often seen as a model for democracy in Africa.

Its exports include cocoa, gold, and oil. However, the country is facing challenges such as youth unemployment and infrastructure development.

Christianity has grown to become the majority religion, with over 70{0efa61f77e4cd09e7b4f08094b2911ffcdf8ad00293cb60de4a24edfe6036ea2} of the population identifying as Christian. Churches play a significant role in education, healthcare, and social services. The Bible Society of Ghana is providing 150,000 Bibles for children aged between 6 – 12 years in primary schools in semi-urban and rural communities.

The education system in Ghana allows for the use of the Bible in Religious and Moral Education (RME). However, many children from poor and marginalised backgrounds are unable to access the Bible. Therefore, the project seeks to address a lack of Bible ownership and literacy along with child delinquency.

Prayer Points for Ghana

Pray for those who claim to be Christian but who do not have an authentic faith to be transformed by the power of the true gospel.

Pray that the children who receive the Bibles will experience lasting transformation in their lives as they interact with the Scriptures.

Pray that Ghanaians under the age of 15, representing over 40 per cent of the population, will be spiritually open when they receive the Word of God.

Pray for the Ghanaian Church, for unity across denominations, and for the Church to continue to be a strong light in society sharing the gospel and serving communities.

Austria

Austria traces its roots back to the Roman Empire. Christianity arrived in the 2nd century AD. The Habsburg dynasty, staunch defenders of the Catholic faith, ruled for centuries. Austria became part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire until its fall after World War I. Annexed by Nazi Germany in 1938, it regained independence in 1955. Today, Austria is a peaceful, democratic nation with a rich Christian heritage, where 64 per cent of the population identify as Christian.

The Austrian Bible Society is providing Scriptures in many languages to refugees and asylum seekers, including both Christians and non-Christians. These include Bibles, children’s Bibles, audio Bibles and Scripture selections, such as “On the Road”, which was written specifically for refugees and migrants.

Mexico

Mexico’s history began with indigenous civilizations like the Maya and Aztecs. In 1521, Spanish conquistadors conquered the Aztecs, beginning three centuries of colonial rule. Christianity, especially Roman Catholicism, was introduced becoming deeply rooted in Mexican culture.

In 1821, Mexico gained independence. In 1867, Mexico broke from the Vatican with diplomatic relations only being restored in 1992. Between 1910 – 1920, the Mexican Revolution took place which ultimately led to the establishment of a constitutional republic. Today, 89 per cent of Mexicans identify as Christian. The Bible Society of Mexico is producing Braille and audio Scriptures. It is translating the Bible into indigenous languages. It is visiting remote, impoverished communities and distributing Scriptures in suitable formats and languages.

Côte d’Ivoire

Côte d’Ivoire, or the Ivory Coast, was home to diverse ethnic groups before becoming a French colony in 1893, which also brought Christianity, especially Roman Catholicism.

The country gained independence in 1960 under Félix Houphouët-Boigny, who maintained close ties with France. Christianity grew, particularly in the south, while Islam remained strong in the north. Though the nation faced political unrest and civil conflict in the 2000s, it has made strides toward reconciliation.

Today, 34 per cent of the population identify as Christian. The Bible Society of Cote d’Ivoire is translating the full Bible into Kru and Dan. It is revising the Baoule Bible which is the most widely used and distributed Bible in the country.

Croatia

In the 7th century, Christianity reached modern-day Croatia, brought there by missionaries from Rome. In the 9th century, Croatia became a Catholic kingdom. Later, it fell under Hungarian and then Habsburg rule. In 1918, the Croats, Serbs, and Slovenes formed a kingdom known after 1929 as Yugoslavia.

Following World War II, Yugoslavia became a federal independent communist state consisting of six socialist republics, including Croatia, under the strong hand of Josip Broz, aka TITO. In 1991, Croatia declared independence from Yugoslavia, sparking a war that ended in 1995. Today, 87 per cent of Croatians identify as Christian. The Croatian Bible Society is translating the Bible into Croatian Sign Language for Deaf Christians in Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina.
